Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
122 PM PDT Tue Oct 8 2024
.SYNOPSIS...
* A gradual cooling trend is expected into early next week, but
temperatures generally remain above average.
* A couple weather systems brushing the region bring enhanced winds
to the region mid to late week.
* Conditions will remain dry into next week, with no signals for
notable precipitation on the horizon.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
The benign weather pattern persists. A weak shortwave sagging across
the Sierra today will provide just enough instability to produce
cumulus buildups and perhaps a few light showers, mainly across the
Eastern Sierra into Mineral County this afternoon. Otherwise, dry
conditions expected areawide. Temperatures remain about 10 degrees
above seasonal averages today, translating to highs in the mid 80s
across western Nevada and northeast California valleys and the mid-
upper 70s for Sierra communities. Expect generally light afternoon
and evening breezes to round out the day, except for the potential
for gusty outflows from dry downbursts from showers south of US-50.
Similar conditions are expected Wednesday, except for an uptick in
afternoon winds as our first weak system flattens the ridge and
introduces more southwesterly flow over the region. A secondary,
slightly deeper system nudges into the region on Thursday into
Friday, passing a dry cold front into the region Friday afternoon.
Expect enhanced winds to return by Thursday afternoon, with winds
remaining elevated over mountain ridgelines overnight into Friday.
Precipitation chances have trended downward behind this cold front,
with only a 10-20% chance for measurable precipitation along the
Sierra crest and northeast California on Saturday. Winds decrease by
the weekend as ridging returns through early next week.
As these systems break down the ridge, expect temperatures to
gradually cool as we head into the weekend. However, they`re still
expected to remain warm for this time of year, bottoming out around
3-5 degrees above seasonal averages by Sunday. Some relief may be on
the horizon as ensemble cluster guidance shows some flavor of a
troughing pattern mid-next week, which would bring generally cooler
temperatures and breezy afternoon winds. Whitlam

.AVIATION...
VFR conditions expected for all regional terminals. Cumulus buildups
expected along and east of the Sierra crest generally south of US-50
this afternoon. Some light showers are being observed over Mono and
Mineral counties, though are likely dry in nature and capable of
producing gusty and erratic outflow winds through 02z for KMMH.
Otherwise, light winds expected for all terminals today before
southwesterly winds tick up Wednesday, with gusts 20-25 kts
possible. Whitlam
